Summer is here! And it’s got us dreaming of a long (island) weekend to kick things off in style. But when heading to Long Island for a little fun in the sun, visitors have to make a choice between staying at an uber-luxe spot and staying at a nice spot that’s not quite as pricey.

Our first option is the gorgeous Panoramic View hotel in the Hamptons, where rates for Memorial Day weekend start at $175 per night. The hotel has a lovely pool overlooking its stretch of private beach, and great views from the in-room balconies and patios. The slightly more upscale Allegria Hotel on Long Beach also boasts ocean views from its stunning pool and spacious rooms, but charges almost $400 per night on the same holiday weekend.

“Sun and surf” might be the stuff of summer, but that doesn’t mean a trip exclusively to the beach is in order. Some of our favorite summer destinations are located inland — but we don’t have to miss out on enjoying the cool off-water breeze or stunning scenery associated with beachy spots when we visit them. River locales, such as charming San Antonio or rugged Snoqualmie, possess all that and then some. Flowing past some of America’s best cities, around mountain ranges, and through desserts, these rivers are the optimal alternative summer spots for boating, fishing, hiking, and more while on vacation. So (bathing) suit up, and get ready to dive into our favorite river destinations.

1. May River in Bluffton, South Carolina 

The May River is just one corner of gorgeous Carolina Lowcountry.

Carolina Lowcountry is a truly other-worldly corner of the United States. Here, salty marshes and mossy forests are connected by scenic waterways. The May, Cooper, and New Rivers wind through the region’s haunting landscapes, providing visitors with unique ways to soak in the beauty of the region. Boating and kayaking are popular, especially since bottlenose dolphins are common in this area. You can also go fishing, crabbing, or shrimping.

STAY:  The Inn at Palmetto Bluff

This “inn” in Carolina Lowcountry is really more akin to a sprawling estate, offering a range of recreational facilities, including golf, bicycling, tennis, croquet, kayaking, and swimming; plus, the luxury spa is highly acclaimed.

2. Rio Grande in Albuquerque, New Mexico 

This historic river is a major tourist attraction in Albuquerque.

The Rio Grande flows through the Southwestern city of Albuquerque from north to south. Visitors can hike through the state parks that border the river — visiting the Rio Grande Nature Center, the Albuquerque Biological Park, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, or the Rio Grande Valley State Park along the way — and get up close and personal with turtles, beavers, coyotes, and great horned owls, just to name a few. The Paseo del Bosque Trail is Albuquerque’s most popular and accessible thoroughfare. This 16-mile paved trail attracts walkers, cyclists, in-line skaters, and equestrians. Many also choose to kayak, canoe, or raft down the river.

STAY: Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa

This upscale resort is a sprawling property on the Santa Ana Pueblo reservation 15 miles north of Albuquerque. Its gorgeous natural setting under vivid blue skies offers panoramic views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Trails lead directly to the Rio Grande and the resort features numerous activities, as well as a golf course, restaurants, and several pools.

3. Snoqualmie River in Snoqualmie, Washington

Prepare to be awed at this Washington State destination.

Best known as the home of Snoqualmie Falls, the 2,683-foot high waterfall, this town offers a lot in the way of outdoor adventures. Located about an hour from Seattle, Snoqualmie attracts visitors looking forward to hiking, as a variety of trails surround the falls (which reach a height 100-feet greater than that of Niagara Falls). Visitors can also rent mountain bikes, go fishing or kayaking, and play a round of golf. In the winter, visitors can go on day trips to the slopes and try their hands (er, feet, we guess) at skiing or snowboarding.

STAY: Salish Lodge & Spa

The Salish Lodge & Spa features 84 rooms in a gorgeous setting overlooking the falls in Snoqualmie. The historic property, which originally opened with only eight rooms back in 1916, is a popular romantic getaway and wedding destination.

4. Chicago River in Chicago, Illinois 

This urban river offers a different spin on the typical waterfront vacation.

Connecting the Great Lakes with the Mississippi Valley waterways, the Chicago River is an important — and beautiful — waterway. Visitors can learn about Chicago’s modern architecture while aboard one of the city’s tour boats, or save a few dollars and hop on a water taxi for an inexpensive way to get around the city and check out the sights. Kayaking and canoeing are also popular, with some excursions leading visitors out to Lake Michigan. You can also stroll the River Walk for some great views.

This mid-range hotel is centrally located in The Loop, on the northern edge of Chicago’s Theatre District. Its 357 rooms — renovated in 2011 — are comfortable and spacious. 5. Lake Austin off of the Colorado River in Austin, Texas

This reservoir off of the Colorado River is a popular fishing and boating destination. Visitors to the Austin area should take a bounce on a water trampoline, go down a super slide, canoe or kayak, or simply go for a nature hike in the surrounding hills. Wildlife viewing is popular – the area is home to one of the largest colonies of American Bald Eagles in the country. There are also wineries and golf courses nearby.

This lakeside retreat along the shores of Lake Austin is more than a spa resort; with kayaking, canyon hikes, yoga and “discovery programs,” it is a true wellness destination. Gorgeous lake views can be seen throughout — from the sun-soaked dining room, cheerful lobby, upstairs living room, and even the modern fitness center.

6. Mississippi River in New Orleans, Louisiana 

Hop on a steamboat in the French Quarter and experience historical NOLA.

For years, the only way to reach New Orleans was to travel down the Mississippi River by ship, and today that tradition perseveres — though it is significantly more localized.  River tours through NOLA by steamboat of paddlewheeler are still extremely popular; visitors can learn about the city’s rich history, soak in the views, and listen to live jazz music while aboard. Travelers should also check out Louisiana’s stunning backcountry, with boat tours of the bayou’s unique natural wonders leaving from the city center daily. For those who prefer dry land, the Mississippi River Trail, a 3,000-mile bicycle path that stretches all the way from NOLA to the river’s starting point in Minnesota, is a must-visit.

The pretty front porch, trendy restaurant, and distinct amenities (such as yoga classes in the Buddha garden) make this a popular choice.

Lobby at The Jade Hotel, New York City

1. FACT OR FAKEOUT? The boutique Jade Hotel may only be a few months old, but it has already has some pretty famous visitors. Last week, Cameron Diaz was spotted getting drinks at the bar and flirting with strangers.

2. FACT OR FAKEOUT? The Westin St. John is one of three Starwood properties that make up the first shift towards the brand reducing its carbon footprint worldwide. The new green initiative will include the installation of high-tech water savers that will reduce wasted water at the hotel by 50 percent.

3. FACT OR FAKEOUT? Wyndham Hotel Group added Singapore to its destination list this week with the opening of a Days Inn and a Ramada.

4. FACT OF FAKEOUT? The general manager of the Lancaster London, along with numerous other volunteers, scaled up the side of the hotel in order to raise money for Kickstart Programme.

5. FACT OR FAKEOUT? Room service is pricey no matter where you go, but in a recent study, TripAdvisor found that Denver and Dallas offer the best value as far as room service. Not surprisingly, New York City and Honolulu offered the worst.

Party: The Bathing Club

At this trendy hotel, the party is at your front door — literally. The rooms are all on the first floor and doors open up right to the grounds that surround the pool lounge, dubbed The Bathing Club. Lounge music pumps through the outdoor speakers, and live DJs spin on Fridays and Saturday nights. Guests can relax on daybeds and cushioned chairs, and on the weekends cocktails are served by the pool until 2 a.m.

Stay: The Cheap Crash Pad

Enclave Inn

Finding an affordable spot to crash in the ritzy Hamptons is no easy feat — but it does exist. The Enclave Inn is a basic 10-room motel with close proximity to Bridgehampton and nearby beaches. Rooms are uninteresting and starting to show wear and tear, but the front porches, outdoor pool, and a pretty lawn allow some breathing space. If you need a cheap place to sleep within driving distance to all that the Hamptons has to offer, then this is a good choice.

Party: Boardy Barn

Boardy Barn is a Hamptons institution, known for its cheap beer, cheap hot dogs, and smiley face stickers that patrons are encouraged to stick on each other (expect to leave covered in them). The raucous daytime drinking scene starts on Sunday afternoons over the summer, and there is always a line. It’s located in Hampton Bays, but those in town for the weekend may prefer to stay in neighboring Bridgehampton as it’s more convenient for hitting up the beach.

Stay: The Chichi B&B

Mill House Inn

Those looking for a quiet, romantic, upscale Hamptons experience should consider Mill House Inn, a meticulously maintained historic home turned bed and breakfast in East Hampton. It’s just a short walk from the village center and offers 10 understated, sophisticated rooms that are full of thoughtful personal touches. The top-notch breakfast and easy walk to restaurants and shops help make it a stand-out option.

Party: SL East

The chic trendsetters who can afford Mill House Inn may appreciate this upscale nightclub located just down the road. It’s the Hamptons outpost of SL in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, and the line can be very long (be prepared to shell out for bottle service if you want to get in). Once you do get in, you’ll find a huge dance hall and terrace with cabanas; there are live DJ and music performances certain nights.

The family-friendly Montauk Yacht Club Resort variety of renovated rooms, suites, and villas overlooking Lake Montauk. The views take advantage of the attached marina, bobbing with boats galore, and are crowned by a white lighthouse. The resort has more than 80 years of intriguing history, and rooms are pricey but nicely decorated in nautical style. Though the location is not directly on the ocean, on-site activities and restaurants, and the free shuttles to town make it a draw for an amenities-filled Hamptons getaway.

Party: Navy Beach

Navy Beach is a relaxed restaurant on Fort Pond Bay with gorgeous sunset views. Both families and couples dine here, and the beachfront outdoor space has a low-key, lounge-y feel when it gets late, with white picnic tables, daybeds and candlelight. Yachts often anchor in front of the restaurant, so those staying at the Montauk Yacht Club could hypothetically take the boat, rather than the car, to dinner — as long as a designated, er, captain is in tow.
